What’s The Update?
Google has recently changed the way Google My Business pages are managed. The new policy requires agencies that manage client listings (like us) to now create their own personal API account.
What Is API & Why Is It Important?
API is the acronym for Application Programming Interface, which is a software liaison that allows two applications to talk to each other.
In our case, this is an interface that lets our custom management dashboard “talk” to your GMB pages through an API that Google allows us to use. This is very common for large agencies like Home Remodeler SEO and our partnership with Google.
How Does It All Work?
The new update means that all agencies (and anyone else wanting to manage a Google My Business other than their own), must create their own Application Programming Interface (API).
It used to be one large API that everyone was under. Apparently some people were doing underhanded techniques (what we call black hat strategies) that were in violation of Google’s guidelines. With everyone using the same API, Google could not pinpoint who it was. Therefore, they have released this update where everyone must create their own API – which allows them to pinpoint who is playing fairly and who is not. They also have a “3 strikes” rule in place for those that try to “game the system”.
